Saint Bernadette’s feast day is coming up on April 16! I love the story of Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. Back in 1858, Mary appeared to Bernadette and told her, “I am the Immaculate Conception,” and that she would not make her happy in this life but the next. Here’s a simple coloring page I made of the two, with a cute flower boarder.

CCC of America has a really great movie/cartoon about saint Bernadette called Bernadette: Princess of Lourdes. Honestly, you should invest in the whole collection of CCC’s movies. But if you want to collect them one at a time, now would be a great time to start with one of my favorites, the one on Saint Bernadette.
I love sharing saint stories with my children, but I really love sharing stories with them about saints who are also children, just like Saint Bernadette. Poor Bernadette is ridiculed and thought to be crazy, but she stands up for what she knows is real and what she saw. In the end, everyone sees that she was telling the truth the whole time. I love that theme (don’t give in to what others think about you, stand up for what you believe and know to be true), but I also loved the theme that we may not always be happy in this life. Our Lady of Lourdes tells Bernadette that she cannot promise that she will be happy in this life but the next. And while I hope my children have a lot of happiness, they should know that this world is imperfect and we may struggle through some parts.
I have a Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes Keychains (from my Joyful Saints illustrations) in my zazzle store! Check them out!
