Giving drink to the thirsty is so much easier than you might initially think. For example, if mom is really pregnant and really thirsty and you get her a drink of water- TA-DA! Work of Mercy done! If you include a bottle of water in your blessing bags, then you’ve done this work of mercy as well. Maybe you are visiting someone in the hospital and bring them their favorite soda or a slushy from Sonic. Really, everyone loves a drink when they’re thirsty, and receiving one without doing anything to deserve it is both humbling and awesome.
The other day I learned a lesson in judging too quickly. I saw an old (presumably homeless) man get out of a really nice BMW, and my first thought was “What? How can he be homeless riding around in that? Even if it’s just his friend’s car, he’s doin’ alright!” And then I realized he was being dropped off back at his backpack and cardboard sign (which he has abandoned on the corner), but now he also had a hot cup of coffee and what looked like a sandwich in his hand. My bad. I immediately wished I was the one who got him the coffee instead of having unjustified thoughts.
Although I don’t yet feel comfortable picking people up and taking them for cups of coffee, it did get me thinking that I could easily get some fast food gift cards and hand those out in place of blessing bags sometimes. A hot meal and hot cup of coffee is probably what this guy needed on this cold February morning. Thank you to the person who did that. You blessed both the man on the corner and me that morning.
Lord have mercy on us, and help us to show the world your mercy,
Kristen
