This is a sad one and can be difficult to talk about with young children. At some point everyone learns that life does not continue forever, and even my 5 year old knows that. She also knows that we pray for those in purgatory and to those in heaven. I have not lost anyone I’m close to since becoming a mother. I suppose that’s a good thing, but it also means I don’t have much to offer in terms of advice for practicing this particular act of mercy with your little ones.
Of course, should you lose someone, attend their funeral. If someone you know has already passed away, you can always plan a visit to the grave site, bring flowers and say some prayers for them. I heard another mom once say that some graveyards not well cared for, and can always use help in weeding, cleaning up trash and just tending to the grave sites in general. If you know of a place like that, consider spending one of your spring afternoon helping clean up the burial place of people that maybe you didn’t have the pleasure of knowing. And lastly, we can always pray for the dead at home and at church.
How will you do this act of mercy with your family this year?
