Yesterday was Ascension Thursday! We were invited to a friend house for a little Ascension party, and I quickly put together this craft for the kids to do. It was so fun and the kids loved making Jesus rise up to the clouds.

To make Jesus ascend to the clouds you’ll need:
- 1 print out of the Ascension Jesus Craft (on card stock preferably)
- about 4-5ft of yarn or string
- a plastic drinking straw (or a couple)
- tape
- cotton balls and white glue if you want to make the clouds ‘fluffy’
- Crayons or coloring pencils to color Jesus
Our 7 year olds made this entire craft without much help. Our 4 year olds needed some help cutting and assembling. The toddlers mostly scribbled and ran away. So that should give you an idea of what to expect at your own Ascension party!
Before I give instructions, let me just say first that Glue is always last! If you to add the fluffy cotton balls, save that for the last step to avoid glue everywhere.
First you want to color Jesus:
Then cut out Jesus and the cloud. Your little kids can cut on the oval dotted line around Jesus to practice their scissor work. Your older kids can challenge themselves to cut out around Jesus.
Tape a 2-3″ section of straw to the back of Jesus.
Fold your string in half and make a loop in the center part (and add some beads small pieces of straws for decoration if desired). Tie a knot below this loop with beads/straws. This is how you will hang up your Ascension Jesus Craft, so make sure your loop is big enough to go around a door handle. My friend had a nail in the wall that we hung these on, so any size loop would work for that.
Tape the yarn near the loop to the back of your cloud.
Thread the yarn through the straw on Jesus’ back (both strings), and then tie small sections of straws to each yarn end to be the ‘handles.
If you want fluffy clouds, now is the time to use a little white glue and glue your cotton balls to the cloud. Keep an eye on those toddlers though!
Now hang up your loop, and pull the straw handles apart from each other and watch Jesus ascend!
This craft was a perfect activity for the kids yesterday. While they colored and cut, my friend Christina read to them the story of the Ascension from her Children’s Bible. Later we had some blue jello and whipped cream (clouds and sky).
It was such a fun party, and I can’t wait to do some more liturgical parties together soon!
What is your favorite way to celebrate the Ascension?
Thanks and God Bless,
Kristen
The jello and cream is such a creative idea!!! I’m stealing! Thanks for sharing….
I have to save this for next year. This is the most exciting craft for the ascension I’ve seen and it isn’t difficult. The blue jello sky and whip cream clouds are wonderfully cleaver.
