“And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “E’loi, E’loi, la’ma sabach-tha’ ni?” which means, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Eli’jah.” And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Eli’jah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Mark 14:33-41

The crucifixion of Jesus is a heavy topic, and difficult to discuss with young children sometimes.  What do you say? How much do you say?  And likewise, making a craft of Jesus’ crucifixion for kids isn’t easy either.  I’ve never liked including a whole lot of blood and gore for my little ones, so this craft was made with minimal blood for coloring.  I don’t want that to be misinterpreted.  The suffering of Jesus and his death were not pretty.  I know that. And I want my kids to know that… when they are a little older and I think they can handle it.  I’m just not into them coloring lots of blood drips, scourge marks etc at the age of 4.  You might disagree, and if so, you can totally add any details you want onto this craft.

Also for tips on discussing Holy Week with little ones, I like Kendra’s approach on Catholic All Year.

Ok enough of me babbling… on to the craft!

This one is pretty strait forward, and I bet your older kids could probably figure it out without instructions.  But I took pictures so I’m going to tell you how to do it anyway!

First print the printable on cardstock.  Color it in and cut out the pieces.

Tuck the tabs under on the calvary hill piece and secure with tape or glue dots.

Gently bend the hill so you can snip the black line slits for the crosses to go in.  You can also use an exacto knife if you feel your students/children are old enough.

Slide the crosses into the slits.  Secure to the underneath of the hill using tape or glue dots.

Attach to your mobile if you wish, by hole punching the cross and tying it to your mobile ring.
